Material relating to Cybernetic systems

2001-08-10

I have the intention of grouping together here
some documents with a bearing on Cybernetics
as I beleive it applies to the current situation.

Cybernetics, a New Science, Seeks the Common Elements in Human and Mechanical Brains
from a review of Norbert Wiener's Cybernetics by William L. Lawrence in New York Times, Sunday, december 19 1948
Interestingly we encounter in this text the term teleology used, or so I beleive ( - it's a subtle issue), in a more restricted sense than the more speculative manner in which I use it in other documents.

Robotics and AI

This lively area of research is distinct from the more restricted problems I intend to discuss above the line, however there is a natural connection and it seems in order to bring it all together like this.

KurzweilAI.net
Kurzweil Accelerating Intelligence Network is a Web showcase for the ideas and technologies of leading visionaries. Bill Clinton calls many political leaders "out of touch" with the acceleration of technology, recommends authors including Kurzweil.

One random example of the thinkers brought together at Kurzweil is

  • Hans P. Moravec   a Principal Research Scientist in the Robotics Institute of Carnegie Mellon University.

    Related information from other sources:

  • A Review of his book Mind Children from 1988, where he predicted that robot intelligence would reach the level of human intelligence in forty years
  • Interview - Hans Moravec from November 28, 1998.
