People must take e-business seriously!
To many people and companies are not taking e-business seriously enough in my opinion. All to often I have surfed into some commercial-site in hope of finding what I need. What do I find?
- Bad layout (Ok, this site is no beauty yet either), maybe I could live with it if it was possible to navigate on the site in a logic way.
- Impossible navigation. Were am I? Were can I go? Were do I find what I want? Need I say more…
- Little to choose from. I can not understand why companies that usually have a large amount of products in stock don't sell them all on the net as well. No wonder that people still go to normal stores instead of buying stuff on the net. What would it look like if a news site only had three month old news stories on their site? Not to good, right?
- Limitations in choice. I once surfed into a site called Shirtmate.se (a Swedish site) that sell quality shirts and ties. There was only one catch, they sold them in packages (for an example three shirt: one blue, two white). Had they ever thought of what I should do if I wanted three blue shirts? Or if I don't like one of the ties when I want to buy two ties?
- A bad business idea in the first place. Some sites and companies stare them selves blind on the possibilities of new technology and don't think of what needs of the customer the site will aim to fulfil. A good example is Swedish telephone operating giant Telia, when they released their emfas.telia site which was aimed at other companies they were asked buy Swedish magazine itAffärer (itBusiness) what their business idea was. Answer? "To combine databases and the internet". Brilliant, simply brilliant… And what use will other companies have of some random searchable databases? Beats me, some may be useful to some people, but that will probably be pure luck. I doubt many companies will pay big money to get access to something they will hardly have any use for.
- Updating the site! I just hate getting to a site which states: "last update 6 of June, 1996". Is the company behind the site still active? At least I wonder that..
The most sad thing about companies reluctance to using the internet is that they even blame their shortcomings on their customers: "Oh, the customers did not buy our stuff on the net, they did not understand their own best interest". Ever thought that the site was bad? Another common attitude is "The internet? Oh it's the future for sure, just don't now why". The last attitude is just what some suspect consults want to hear, a perfect attitude when they want to sell all kinds of solutions they don't need at overprices. I actually believe that the bad behaviour of consult gold diggers is making people reluctant to start using the web. The last category are the "techno-haters", usually older conservative businessmen that have the attitude that things shouldn't change.
Sadly peoples attitudes about the Internet is either that there are no bad things about it, or that the internet is the Devils work. We have to start critically watch both the possibilities and the weaknesses of the Internet, in my opinion there are far more possibilities, but start using them to your advantage, damn it!
I have probably missed lots of points, I would be happy if you would help me make this list more complete by contacting me.
