MINIATURE HOUSES FOR CHILDHOOD PLAY AND FUN IN SWEDEN

LEKSTUGEARKIVET

A few years back I started to collect pictures of playhouses and stories about family life in and around the miniature houses reserved for children in gardens all over Sweden. I had selected playhouses as a subject for my exam paper at the Institute of Ethnology at the Stockholm University. No scholar had earlier found these houses interesting enough to write about so I was free to look around for my own material.

In the museums a few pictures and some childsized furniture and household equipments were saved for the future, but there was nothing for me to use in a paper. Therefore I asked a well-known weekly family magazine to publish an appeal for stories and pictures about children's playhouses. The response was overwhelming. First I finished my Bachelor of Arts degree and later I used the material in a summer exhibition at Leksands Kulturhus in Dalarna, Sweden. Next spring I will publish a book with pictures and stories about playhouses from all around Sweden. The tradition of building houses for play and joy goes back to the last decades of the nineteenth century and are still going on.

The reason for this HTML site is to share some of the material with you and maybe in return I will learn somewhat about playhouse traditions in other countries.
