Penguins - Maple Leafs

Jagr joins up with Lindros in Toronto

In what is one of the top two blockbusters of all time in LML Penguins send Jaromir Jagr, the wonderful czech, to Toronto Maple Leafs in exchange for a lot of players. Here is the overview:

To Leafs: Jagr and Burr

To Penguins: Mogilny, Arnott, Korolev and Johnson

This trade is about sacrifice. Leafs were willing to give up four major players in exchange for what is probably the best player in the world. Did they give too much? Looking at their team one definetly wonders.

Leafs will get a killer line with Jagr & Lindros + somebody. That line will probably be able to beat every teams first line with a goal or more. What looks worrying is that the rest of the team looks really bad. Even if Jagr & Lindros win their matchups the rest of the three lines will probably leak, especially with a defence and a keeper that is currently in Leafs. The team looks weaker now with Jagr in the team even though it's hard to imagine that. Fact is that the Leafs can't even make a line up right now. They just don't have enough players... and what happens in case of an injury to a keeper? They better get some players in the free agency and use as many picks in the entry draft as possible. This trade really hurt the team but as we saw last year when they got Lindros they know what they are doing! Just to prove me wrong they'll probably win the LML now...

Penguins made some big mistakes in the offseason and their team looked in a real bad shape. Now, two trades later their team looks better then ever! For Jagr they got a good reliable scoring right winger to replace him in Mogilny. They also solved their problems with their centers by aquiring Arnott and Korolev. Korolev seems overrated but the Pnes won't mind that. As a bonus they got Mike Johnson who will make many peopla happy in Pittsburgh. All in all the Penguins went for young promising scorers. Arnott should also fill the void left after the Drake trade. All of a sudden the Pens have depth as well as talent in their team. We saw that the Leafs last year kicked ass with just Lindros and Pens with just Jagr. Now we'll see if a team can be succesfull even without a superstar. Team vs divas is what this will result in. Many GM's will follow the destinys of Leafs and Pens to see whether they too should pay the big prices to get themselves their own superstars...

All in all the Pens got themselves a better team through the trade. I think they came out better in the deal. The Leafs received a superstar. They paid the price. The outcome will probably change how trades are made in the LML... forever.
