The Aussie FJ & XJR Home Page

Welcome to the Aussie FJ & XJR Home Page. The first FJ was released in 1984, a decade later the last model was to hit our shores. Despite this the FJ has maintained a strong following. The XJR motor was originally developed for the FJ1200. However poor world wide sales of the FJ1200 in 1995, and Yamaha's desire to cash in on the "Retro Naked Bike" style  led to the release of the XJR. The XJR first appeared in Australia in December 1995.

Please enjoy browsing these pages which reflects Australia's interest in the mighty FJ 1100 and 1200 series, as well as the new XJR. This page is also regularly updated. Our aim is to "To leave no FJ or XJR stone unturned".

FJ & XJR Specifications

These specifications refer to the FJ's and XJR's that landed here in Australia. There were differences between the bikes depending on the laws in each country or state that they were sent to. For example  in Australia the rear sprocket on our FJ's is one tooth larger than the rear sprocket on FJ's that were sent to America.

FJ Quick Reference Data
This page gives a quick reference guide to the simple questions many FJ'ers have asked. Questions such as, how much air do I put in the tyres? And how much fork oil to have in the forks?
Note : this data is not apply to the XJR 1200.
FJ Colours in Australia
This FJ colours section was completed by Trevor, an FJ list member. Most information has been sourced from factory brochures. Note : colours are for the model year, not the year the bike was registered.
FJ Changes Over Time
As far as we can establish this is how the FJ's that arrived in Australia changed over time.
As far as I know the XJR was not changed until 1998 when the motor was enlarged to a 1300cc.
FJ and XJR Modifications
The most common modification to the FJ seems to be a four into one exhaust system. Usually this is combined with an after market air filter,  re-jetting and tuning. This provides excellent results if your looking for an increase in power across the range. However it is a pain for many to remove the four into one exhaust system every time they want to change the oil. Other common modifications people make to their FJ's are installing handlebar risers and replacing the useless factory horn.  Generally however most FJ owners are happy to leave their pride and joy stock standard or as they purchased it. For die hard enthusiasts there is always the option to replace the 16 inch rear wheel with an FZR1000 17 inch rear wheel. Or really get keen and  install a big bore kit. Or  perhaps walk on the wild side with nitrous oxide.

I recently received an e-mail from an XJR owner, below are some of the modifications he has made to his XJR1200.

1.    Front forks re-sprung with progressive springs by OHLINS.
2.    Handle bars changed to Kawasaki Z1 bars.
3.    Exhaust  changed to KIRKER 4-1 with race end can.
4.    Re-jetted with DYNOJET kit.
5.    Air filter replaced with K&N.
6.    Rear shocks changed to fully adjustable OHLINS.
7.    Front disks changed to EBC PRO-LITE.

From what  I gather the most common modification to the XJR seems to be to add an after market front fairing. Nothing worse than being hit in the chest by wind.

If you own an XJR and have modified it please e-mail. I'd love to hear about what you've done.

FJ and XJR Manuals in Australia
So you've just purchased yourself an FJ or an XJR and now your keen to do some maintenance on it. According to my local Yamaha dealer there are no manuals at this stage available in Australia for the XJR. However you can order microfiche for it at your local Yamaha dealer. It will probably cost you anywhere between $60 and $100. Microfiche breaks all parts of a bike  down into three dimensional drawings. The trouble is that this doesn't really help you in regard to setting up your suspension etc. And also you need a special projector to view it. So for most owners microfiche won't do the job.

There are two manuals out there relating to the FJ, the Clymer and the Haynes. There has been a long standing debate about which manual is better. I can't comment on the Haynes as I've never used it. I've found some small mistakes in the Clymer but it has steered me successfully through most jobs. The Clymer manual is available from Strathfieldsaye Auto Books, Vic. It sells for $44.95 plus postage. Their phone number is 03 54 395 000.

The Technical Bookshop in Swanston Street, Melbourne has the Haynes manual.  It sells for $39.95. Trevor has been using
Haynes manuals for a number of years and thinks they're ok, but they do have a few errors (like referring to anti-dive units on
1988 - 1990 models). The Technical Bookshop's phone number is 03  9663 3951.

FJ Motorcycle Story
Here's an article for those who like to read. Predominately it's on the FJ but does make reference to the XJR. In italic is little bits that I've added.
Aus.Motorcycle Newsgroup
For those of you who run Windows 95 you can subscribe to a newsgroup called aus.motorcycles through the program Internet News. Others will have to use newsgroup readers suitable for their computer. aus.motorcycels represents Australian riders who own all types of makes and models. I haven't come across many FJ or XJR owners on there, however some threads can be quite interesting.
