In 1976, the unorthodox Audi engineers came up with an ingenious solution
to the fuel crisis, by introducing the first volume production 5 cylinder engine.
With all the power of six cylinders and the economy of four.

Like all unconventional innovations, the odd-cylindered engine was greeted
with widespread scepticism. This was convincingly silenced when, in
turbocharged form, it set ten world speed records around the
Talladega Speedway in Alabama USA, and followed this with two
new world marks for the 800 and 1000km distances on the
Nardo test track in Southern Italy
