Society


a) English-speaking countries. You should be able to describe social structure, politics and culture in two English-speaking countries of your own choice.

b) You should be prepared to discuss current issues from the English-speaking world.


Literature


a) The anthology Short Fictions - all texts. The three first pages of each story are to be read intensively, i.e. you should master the vocabulary and be able to explain the words in English.

b) Shakespeare. You should know about his life, work and the Elizabethan theatre. You should also be able to account for the plot of either Romeo and Juliet or Macbeth or Hamlet.

c) You should also know something about Jonathan Swift and Jane Austen and their work.

d) Choose five poems. Suggested authors are: Wordsworth, Keats, Whitman, Dickinson, T.S. Eliot, Plath, Heaney and Dylan. You will be asked to read and discuss the poems.

e) You should read three novels. You may choose one of these freely. The other two should be decided together with your examiner. If you aspire for either a VG or an MVG one of the three novels has to be a classic novel from either the 19th century or the first half of the 20th century. (See reading list) . In connection with the three novels you should also know a few things about the authors and be able to put them in a literary context.
