INTERNET SITES
http://www.amfire.com - American Firearms Industry Homepage The official journal for the National Association of Federally Licensed Firearms Dealers. They have firearms for sale, catalogs, articles, a calendar of gunshows in America and a statisticsarchive with stats over homicides 1900-1990, causes of death in the US, police deaths etc. Naturally the site is not very objective at all since it’s AFI’s homepage. They are very pro-guns and believe that crime decrease as the guns increase, which can be seen in their statistics-archive. http://www.fbi.gov/ucr/hatecm.htm - FBI Hate Crime Report Hatecrime statistics in the United States 1995. Reporting by state, bias motivation, offense category and known offender’s race. The site is very informative and objective (since there are almost no text except the statistics). You get a sence of how much the crimerate differs between the states (a complete of three reported incidents in North Dakota and 1751 in California). Perhaps they could update the stats, the ones printed are from 1995. http://www.ojp.usdoj.gov/bjs/cvict.htm - Bureau of justice statistics On this site you can, as the name reveals, find statistics about crimes in USA. There are many different statistics. Such as: What is the characteristic for perpetrators and victims, the crime rate falling the last couple of years and the chance of becoming a victim of several different crimes. We think it´s a quite good page. It may not have the greatest design but it holds some useful information. Pages like this shouldn´t really look so very flashy, that´s not the purpose. http://www.nashville.net/~police/risk - Rate your risk This is a page with three tests. The first rates your risk of getting raped, robbed, stabbed, shot or beaten. The second, your risk of being murdered. And the third and last, the risk of someone breaking into your house. We think it´s interesting to do the tests. But if you get many points it means you have a pretty big risk of becoming a victim. If so they recommend you to buy a weapon and not open the door or leaving the house without it. That´s how USA is. http://www.icpsr.umich.edu/NAJCD/archive.html - NAJCD Archive - official statistics Here you can find many surveys about crimes in USA. Different from the Bureau of justice page is that you can find more surveys and they range further back in time. It´s not only from the 90´s. E.g. there is a survey about homicides in Chicago from 1965 to 1995 and that is very good. Http://www.usnews.com/usnews/news/VIOLENT.HTM - Cities Ranked By Violent Crimes Now this one’s interesting. This page has been put up by News Infobank and shows American cities ranked by violent crimes. It also gives you the percentage-change in violent crimes between 1993 and 1994. Nothing very special with the layout though, just pretty plain. http://www.acsp.uic.edu/oicj/pubs/cja/080407.htm - Violence in modern society A page containing strictly text describing the development of violence throughout modern history. The author, by the name of Paul Ruffolo, uses a bit of a dry language. It’s overall a pretty difficult text to read but mostly due to the fact that the page is so very dull. It contains hardly no graphics, just plain text which makes it boring to read if you sit in front of your computer. http://www.ojp.usdoj.gov/bjs/glance.htm#Crime - Bureau of Justice Statistics Key Crime and Justice Facts at a Glance Page containing statistics regarding violent crimes. It has been put up by the Bureau of Justice Statistics, which is a bureau under the U.S. Department of Justice. It has a lot of graphics, and that´s about all there is to it. You can observe the statistics-graphics and see the current trends in violent crimes. Problem is that it only compares the difference between 1995 and 1996´s rate-trends. http://www.peoriapd.com/mid97viol.htm - 1997 Mid-Year Violent Crimes, City of Peoria, IL A homepage maintained by the City of Peoria and it shows graphics that compares the mid-year crime rate between 1996 and 1997 in Peoria. And that´s the problem, it only concerns the city of Peoria but we´ve included it anyway as it perhaps gives you an idea about the rate of violent crimes in an average American city. Nice layout which makes it interesting to read. http://pie.mhsc.org/DataPages/sd-018.htm - Violent crimes in Franklin County: 1982-1995 Shows the number of violent crimes made during the period of 1982-1995 in Franklin County. Very interesting if you want to study the violent crime development but again the problem is that it only shows one place´s numbers. And just like the page before we included this one as it gives you an idea about the overall violent crime trend in the USA. The site is very plain and rather dull looking but it contains a link some graphics showing us the numbers. http://www.doc.state.us/charts/vioindex.htm - Oklahoma Total Violent Index Crimes 1974 through 1996 Like the two pages mentioned above, this page concentrates on just one place, in this case Oklahoma. It gives us graphics regarding violent crimes been made throughout the period 1974 to 1996. We didn´t find this type of graphics showing us the whole country of USA, so this will have to do. And as mentioned before it should give us a clue about the crime percentage overall. Nicely done graphics which makes it not so dull.ARTICLE SUMMARIES
http://www.twibp.com/archives/4/14.html - This week in Bible Prophecy: Violent Crimes by Pre-Teens Increasing Comparing 1986 and 1992, murder increased by 2 percent in the United States, rape 7 percent and aggravated battery 15 percent. But murders committed by juveniles age sixteen and below increased by 96 percent, rape 14 per cent and aggravated battery 74 percent. Juvenile Court Judge Charles May says that the youngsters appearing in his courtroom some-times are so small he has to stand up just to be able to see them. http://racinecounty.com/stories/drop.htm -Violent crime falls 20% in city In 1996, violent crimes in the city of Racine dropped by about 20 percent, reaching the lowest level since 1988. Violent crimes include: murder, rape, robbery and aggravated assault. In 1995 there were 817 casaulties. One year later, in 1996, the number had decreased to 650. Police Chief Richard Polzin says he doesn’t know why the crime rate dropped. The Community Oriented Policing programmed may be part responsible. It was a crackdown on drugdealers earlier the same year. Other relevant factors may be tougher sentencing, better policing, decreased drugtraffic etc. Through cooperation by police, neighbors, politicians and volunteers, a new community policing outpost opened in 1996.WORDLIST
