First, MUD is short for Multi User Dunegon. As the name tells you it is a multi player game , i.a. it has several players. MUD is a sort of roleplaying. Most MUD:s are text based, though some graphic MUD:s do exist. This page is about the texed based versions, the first thing you do on a MUD is to create a character, this can take some time depending on witch MUD it is, the character is YOU in the game. In some MUD:s you get to chose different races, skills and profesion. Generaly you might say that you type what you want to do, for example type a direction where you wanna go or pick up if you want to get something in the room. Also most MUD:s are "player friendly" that means that you can't kill other players exept on special arenas, but some you can kill anywear. There are some MUD:s that are REALY roleplaying but most of them are pure fun, meeting friends, killing some monsters, and all the other things you do on your sparetime. Exploring a new world with new things to learn and discover. The only program you need to play a MUD is Telnet, and that program is included in Win95. For those of us that want something else, we can always get a MUD client. A program designed for MUD playing. That is more comfortable to use for several reasons. The to biggest MUD clients are G-mud and Z-mud Z-mud is more advanced that G-mud and it is the program is use. Z-mud can be downloaded in shareware format from the manufactor Zuggsoft. If you prefer G-mud just search for Gmud with your favorite searchengine.

Common commands in a MUD ( These might not work on all MUD:s )
  • look - lets you se whatīs in the room you are in.
  • get item - get (pick up) a specific item.
  • inventory - lets you se what your character is carying.
  • north, south, etc. - lets you walk in a specific direction.
  • kill - by typing this you attack a monster.
  • help - bring up the help file for the MUD.
  • wear - lets you put on equipment.
  • score - brings up your experience points and how many you need to go up a level.


Of course there are many more commands on a MUD, but these are the most common once, and they shoul work on most MUD:s. If you ask me about any quests I will report this to an administrator. The penalty for cheating on MS can be for example, your character getīs jailed for a period of time or you can get banished from the MUD. Remember that the only way you realy can get experience from a MUD by playing it, happy Mudding.
