The usual message about his death will then show up, but when you get out, he will be there waiting. Alternatively, you can kill the Balrog. Just KILL BALROG when he comes charging. If everyone gets a hit on him, he should be dead within the first round. Finally, here is an alternative way to solve the first part: Leave one hobbit (Merry, for example) behind in Bree. Have him enter the pub where the three riders are sitting. Then, take the rest of the party to the Last Bridge (with the help of Strider). BECOME SAM. SAY TO FRODO "LOOK, EAST". BECOME MERRY. Because the character in your control is now with the riders, they will not be teleported to the final location, but since Frodo (with the ring) is there, the game is finished. (This may seem pointless, but it allows you to solve the game without having to find all those jewels.) I checked up the exact solution for getting past Caradhras, by the way. After having survived the blizzard, you must go east twice, then save (in case some of the idiots in the Fellowship should choose not to obey your instructions) and then say to each individual character "E, E, SE". You may want to be careful about the order you tell people since Sam, for instance, will always follow Frodo. Another interesting "feature": When you are chased by the Black Riders in the beginning of the second part, all you need to do to escape them if you are not mounted, is to turn back west, the way you came. They will then, ehm, overshoot you or something. Of course, this does not solve the problem of getting past the ford, but at least it avoids you being killed. (NP notes: In the first part, you can also confuse the Riders by running towards them.) "The Pawn" Some C64's could have a faulty VIC chip. Climb down the longest vine, cut off the vine to the left and tie it to the piece on the right.Climb down the tied vines and when you reach the bottom walk to the right and open the hatch with the crowbar. Collect the fruit and climb back up the vine. Walk right, until you come to a passage 'too narrow for you to pass through'. Throw the fruit. Stripy will chase after it and return bearing the torch, which he will duly give to you. Go back to the vine room and climb down the vine again. Enter the hatch swrtch on the torch and climb out again. Climb up to the top of the vine and cut it down, then walk to the vine on the left and climb down until you can go no further. Tie the two vines togother, then climb down again. Walk left until you find the hatch you opened earlier, then go through it to enter the Treen's underground complex. Climb down the long ladder and walk right. Climb down any one of the three ladders and walk left to find a Treen guarding a closed door. Use the crowbar to open the door, then walk left. Kill any Treens you encounter to get special pass cards (you need three of them). Make your way down the network of ladders and gantries until you come to an unlit room. Use the torch to find your way about, then go down until you come across two cells which you should open with your pass cards to free your friends. Make your way back up to the darkened room and walk to the left you should now be standing in front of a large laser. Don't use it just yet. Walk left until you enter a compiex of interchangeable mirrors. There are three main reactors hidden in the complex. You must set the mirrors so that when the laser beam is fired by the cannon, it is deflected by the mirrors to the hole in front of the reactor. Remember to destroy the reactors in order (look at the numbers stamped on the side of each one). Once you've blown up all three computers, go up to the third computer where you will find a door has opened. Walk left, killing any Treens as you make your way to the Mekon's lair. Lob ten grenades at the Mekon, avoiding his bursts of laser fire. Once you've disposed of the green bonced one you are given two minutes to escape. There's an easy way out, but that's the bit you've got to figure out for yourself... ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Garfield ------------------------------------------------------------------------ First of all get the aniseed balls (which make Odie follow you). Go to the back door, where there's a bone. Pick it up and put it to the left by the door. Odie now opens the cat flap, allowing you free access to the rest of the locations. Go and get the lamp and find Nermal. Give him a good kick and pick up the clockwork mouse. Go to the health food shop and drop the mouse next to the man. A 'Donut' magically appears, which should be picked up - and be careful NOT to eat it. Go to the giant oscillating rat, drop the donut and it runs off. Kick open the chest and get the key that's contained within. Return to the starting location and drop the key. Get the trowel, walk to the hardware shop, and use it by the man. A dollar appears from nowhere, which should be collected. Return to the health food shop, use the dollar next to the man and get the bird seed. Take this to the right hand side of the park, drop it and a bird flies by. Leave the bird and go and get the key. Return to the park and jump on the bird (don't drop the key) and it drops you in the City Pound. Enter and walk right into the cell and Arlene is rescued. Garfield can now live happily ever after... ------------------------------------------------------------------------ TRAPDOOR ------------------------------------------------------------------------ General Tips Berk will need the help of various monsters and objects to complete his tasks of preparing disgusting grub for The Thing. The monsters all come up out of the Trapdoor whilst the objects are located around the basement. If Berk misplaces or loses some of the things he needs to complete a task, he can leave that task and arrange things for the next one. Objects will always remain where he last put them. Alternatively he can hurl himself down the trapdoor in desperation and the game will restart. Berk can pick things up, tip, carry and push them. But he must be in exactly the right position to do so. That goes especially for pushing things, where exact positioning is very important. Berk can wander around wherever he pleases so it's a good idea for him to explore all the locations and try to memorise where various things are - he'll have to use them all eventually. There are three levels - the ground, the balcony and the cellar - and Berk can also move forward or back. It's also an idea to practise moving the lever that opens and shuts the trapdoor so that you can do it quickly in an emergency. Berk has two sidekicks, Boni and Drutt. Boni is the talking skull who, when picked up, will sometimes give bits of advice - and sometimes he won't bother. Drutt, the spider, just gets in the way and seems to be of little use. First Task - A Can of Worms Pretty simple, this one. Make sure you pick up the can as opposed to a container that looks like a can. Go back to the trapdoor and open it to let out the worms. Remember to shut it quickly so that nothing else comes out. Grab as many worms as you can before Drutt eats them. There's a clever way of getting rid of Drutt using the trapdoor as a tool. Remember you can always get more worms by opening the trapdoor again. Pick up the can and place it on the dumb waiter. Then you've got to find a way of sending it to The Thing - should be no problem there. When he's scoffed them, he'll say nice things to you. Wait a little while and he'll shout down the next order, which will probably be... Second Task - Fried Eggs Open the trapdoor and let out the giant chicken and shut the trapdoor quickly so that nothing else can escape. To actually get the monster to lay an egg you'll have to flick something (to be polite) up its posterior. The thing you need is a bullet - and we're not telling you where to find it. If you lose the bullet, another object will do - even Drutt. Here's a clue, the trapdoor itself comes in very handy here as a flicking tool. Oh, and you'll need a container for the eggs. You'll know when the monster is ready to lay an egg because its eyes get bigger. When you've collected at least four eggs in the container (remember that eggs break easily) it's time to set about cooking them. No points for sussing out that the stove comes in useful here. When you're sure the eggs are cooked, send them up in the dumb waiter. Task Three - Boiled Slimeys Getting more complicated. The slimies are down in the flooded cellar. Take the bucket down with you and grab a few. You've then got to get them into the big red pot to boil them. But Berk's not tall enough to tip them in. So you'd better find a higher vantage point. With the slimeys in the pot, you can let the flame-thrower monster up from the trapdoor - again, you'll know him when you see him. Somehow, you've got to use this nasty piece of work to boil the slimeys. By the way, they're not ready if the pot isn't steaming. It must still be steaming when you send it up in the dumb waiter. Remember to get rid of the flame-thrower when you've finished with him. But he won't go down the trapdoor, so try crushing him - you'll need something pretty heavy. Task four - Eyeball Crush You must be a real berk if you can't suss out which monster to use for this one. The real problem is finding out where to get the eyeballs. Well, you won't find them anywhere - you've got to grow them. That's why there's a packet of seeds lying around. Find a reasonable place to plant the seeds and watch as they grow magically into plants. The plants (surprise, surprise) will produce just what you were looking for. All you've got to do now is to collect the eyeballs and turn them into the required crush. With help from the monster and the vat (the big tub on the stand) you should be able to work something out. And then you've got to collect the juice in a suitable container and send it up to the The Thing - he's getting pretty thirsty. By the way, the monster bounces round all the rooms and will eventually go back down the trapdoor if you wait long enough. Task Five - Tidy Up There are many ways to tidy up but the general idea is to collect everything movable and chuck it down the trapdoor. You need to save one edible item for the ghost to take it when he appears. Close the trapdoor. Now it's time to open the safe. What safe? You won't find it downstairs. That must mean The Thing has it upstairs? When you've got the safe, you have to work out a way of opening it. You'll be transported to the first screen of level three and given a 140000 point bonus and two extra lives. There's also a extra warp on this screen: wear the hat, go up the lift to the top level and run down the hidden ramp until you reach the bottom (in the middle). Press fire and you will be warped to the first screen of level five, netting a 280000 point bonus in the process. This warp is pretty tricky as it requires some nifty timing and some precise control of Bentley to get him in the right position before the hat runs out - the warp does not work if he's not wearing the hat. Battle through the first two screens of level five and you'll get a to a screen called 'The Crossroads'. Make your way up to the back left of the screen, stand there and press fire to complete the final warp, taking you to the first screen of level seven, increasing your score to 420000 and restoring any lost lives. The game also has a facility which allows you to carry on from the level on which you died, although you must complete the first screen on that level to be able to return to it, otherwise the warp will take you to the next level down.
