The first thing you have to think about is how much time you wish to spend on your Search Engine ranking. You have three alternatives, five minutes, about two hours or a few hours every week. The result is going to depend on how much time you spend. If you just spend five hours using some free auto submitting service to get your page listed in the major Search Engines. This won't give you a lot of visitors and it is incredible how many people that are not doing anything more than this after all the work they have done creating their websites.
The second alternative and the one I recommend is to work a few hours on your site and then you will probably get a decent ranking in most Search Engines. This does somewhat depend on how many webmasters that are trying to get into the top ten. If you have a site that is the only one in the area of interest it will probably be quite easy to achieve a top ten ranking.
The third alternative is work a few hours every day just to increase your Search Engine ranking. If you have the time, do it you can really boost the number of hits on your site. The more people are searching for a specific keyword with the search engine, the harder it is to reach the top spot. Trying to reach the top ten with words like sex or mp3 is so hard that you would probably have to work 30 or 40 hours a week just to achieve that ranking. Here are a few tips that might be helpful: 1. The Title tag is the most important tag in most search engines, don't just put the name of your homepage there. Make sure to have at least two or three of your most important keywords in the title tag. 2. Resubmit your site to the Search Engines once every second month. It sometimes happens that the search engines drops your site from its index, but don't submit it more often than that since you might be penalized for spamming the Search Engines. 3. Focus on the top search Engines, it's really no idea submitting your site to hundreds of Search Engines since 98% of your hits from search engines will come from the top 15 engines. Create a doorway page, a doorway page is a page that's made only for the Search Engines, The design of this page is not very important but don't use any images, tables, frames or javascripts on this page. Just write a small text (between 100 and 200 words) where you try to use all your important keywords and phrases three or four times each. You must also put some links to various parts of your website here so that the visitors can reach the real part of your website. 5. Use the ALT tag in the images, some search engines ranks your page higher on a specific keyword if they find it in some ALT tag on your site.
