This is another wartime performance with a history. As Mme. Ginette
Guillamat recalls it, the day before the Marseilles maquis had killed a German
officer. In reprisal, the German occupation authorities ordered a civilian
curfew. Since soloists and orchestra wouldn't be able to return to their homes
after a night performance, it was decided to record the opera in the afternoon
on acetate disks, to be played at night.
We owe to this the survival of this performance, which otherwise would not
have been recorded. Incidentally, the recording comes from the personal copy of
Mme. Guillamat. The Institut National de l'Audiovisuel - INA has a ledger for
the performance but no actual disks.
