French Radio, Marseilles, November 9, 1942
In 1940, after the German invasion and the armistice, French Radio moved to
the so-called "free zone", where the Vichy régime of Marshall
Pétain still commanded some authority. This is the reason why this
broadcast was made from Marseilles. Typical of the time is the announcement at
the beginning of act 3, where the words "Etat Français"
(French State) replace the former "République Française".
In fact, this broadcast happened at a moment of acute crisis for Vichy. The
day before, American troops had disembarked on French North Africa. Two days
later, the Germans crossed the armistice line and abolished the fiction of a "free
zone". A few months later, Germaine Cernay would die at the age of 43.
