Arachne
The most skilled weaver of Lydia, taught in the art of weaving by the goddess Athena herself. Arachne was very vain, and challenged Athena to a weaving contest. Athena wove in her web stories of those who had aroused the anger of the gods, while Arachne chose stories of the errors of the gods. Enraged by the excellence of her work, Athena tore Arachne's web to tatters. Arachne hanged herself in grief and was transformed by Athena into a spider.
