Although
Craig has been to Stockholm
a few times, the first time for us to share the experience of living together
there was excellent. This letter back home gives our first impressions...

April 1997
We got into Sweden
in the winter of the 14th March and were greeted with -2 C and snow
everywhere. The snow certainly makes everything pretty and we had a lot
of fun for the first few days walking around as the snow was falling, but
we’ve had enough now, as we miss the sun and my tan is fading dramatically!
Over the past couple of days it has stopped snowing and it is a lot warmer,
it’s now +3 C. We’ve been told by many people that we have arrived at a
good time of the year as the Swedes are beginning to come out of their
gloom and doom and are a lot more positive and friendly, and we have certainly
found this to be true.
The apartment that Ericsson has given
us is terrific. It is only 5 mins walk from the centre of the city and
in a really good location. The 5 story building
our apartment is in was built in 1805, but all that remains of this era
are very high ceilings with decorative plaster work and polished floor
boards in a few rooms. As expected with the Swedish culture we’ve got 2
single beds in our bedroom, but pushed together it gives us a king sized
bed!
At least we won’t be fighting over room or the doona cover. The bathroom
which adjoins onto our room is a bit of a disappointment. It’s very small
and there is no bath. Our lounge room is huge and we have a combined kitchen
/ meals area which is workable. Our second bedroom-come-study is quite
small and has a sofa bed for when you come to visit us !!!. In the shared
basement we store our bikes and home brew kit. This is also where the laundry
is and we have to book a time each week to use it. Ericsson has furnished
the apartment very nicely. All of the furniture and appliances are brand
new. The only disappointing part is the linen. All sheets and towels are
white with
We have some very interesting neighbours all of whom are so friendly. One is a Lawyer, another a professional english golfer and there was an Algerian / Lebanese man next door to us, but we didn’t get to meet him as he was found murdered in his apartment the day we arrived !! As last weekend was our first in Stockholm,
we went exploring. The first thing we did was hunt down an Aussie Pub!
It cost us AUS$ 75 for 6 beers (highly
taxed) and one meal which we shared. We can’t afford to do this too
often so next time we’ll have to cut back on the meal! The next day
we went go-carting with a few Ericsson guys. It was like a mini Grand -
Prix as everyone was from a different country. I didn’t have a go as I
was lead to believe (by Craig who was frightened that I would show him
up) that they race very seriously, but after watching them I’m keen to
have a go next weekend as I feel that I could give a few guys a run for
their money. I must admit though that Craig didn’t crash once and if you’ve
ever been in a car with him, you’ll agree with me that this was amazing.
On the following day we went ice-skating
on a frozen lake. It was wonderful, but ill fitting boots made it quite
hard. We then spent the afternoon cycling around Stockholm. There are excellent
bike tracks everywhere, a few covered by snow. At one
Craig
is really enjoying his new job. He has a lot of team building afternoon
teas and the people he works with are quite friendly. He is currently working
on the GSM mobile market in India - obviously his vandaloo curries have
come in handy. It is also likely that he will get Taiwan as a market later
in the year. His job will still mean a lot of
I’m currently a lady of leisure until Tracey ( Craig’s sister ) arrives in mid April. She and I are then going hiking and camping in Nth Sweden, Lapland and down the west coast of Norway. Then depending on time, we will either go down to Copenhagen via Oslo or cut straight through to Stockholm. We then have some serious wedding dress shopping and planning to do as she and Innes got engaged a week ago. Mind you, the wedding is not until sometime next year but I want to have some fun with Tracey now as I’ll miss out on all of the serious planning that will go on in Brisbane. Craig and I will of course come back for the wedding. In mid May when Tracey and I have finished
our crazy adventure, I’ll then start looking seriously for a job. I am
already starting to put together a few prospects such as teaching english
(my mother who constantly corrects all of my english, is probably killing
herself laughing at the moment ), or working with Ericsson as an Administrator.
I am
Anyway, besides all of the t.v. watching
and gym I’ve also joined a day time ladies tennis comp. and I’m currently
playing on Monday
Jag heter Tiffany och Craig och vi bor I Stockholm. Craig arbetar i Kista på Ericsson. Vi taler engelska och låserSo much for our first 2 nights of Swedish lessons. I take it back when I said that I’ll be conversational by August! I’m having a lot of trouble trying to roll my "R’s". Craig is doing well though. |

Here's some information on Gamla Stan...
We've done the "tour" one or 2 times. If Tiffany never taught, she
could always work as a Gamla stan tour guide! But in fact she did
get a job ...
