One of my greatest passions, other than computers, is Games Workshop products. I first got in contact with these great games on a gaming event back in 1987. That was the first time i laid eyes(and a second later hands) on Blood Bowl. This was the first edition and has ever since been one of my favourite games. I don't think too much about the second edition(the dwarves were too powerful), but with the third edition out the game is better than ever. I think everybody should try it out. Personally I prefer to play humans or the orks as they both can use quite diverse tactics. The race I hate the most are Wood Elves, the Wardancers are just a bit too good in the beginning. They are a real pain all of the time and if you don't penetrate their armour those few times you are lucky enough to make them eat the grass you are bound to get really irritated with them. But after a few tournaments you finally have a team of your own where at least some models have the block skill, mighty blow and a dirty player or two, then at last the Wardancers will get beat up. I also think that both Dark Elves and High Elves pretty much suck, especially High Elves with their high points cost and bad set of players.
After Blood Bowl came Warhammer Fantasly Role Playing game, which really introduced me to the wonderful world of Warhammer. The background for the whole environment is probably one of the best composed ever and you really get sucked in by all it's wonders. The Enemy Within Campaign, a linked series of adventures for WFRP, is in my opinion the best adventures ever to be written and I can't recommend them enough. They have given me many satisfying hours of roleplaying.
In my gaming group we are always on the look for new and interesting games. We had some really old versions of both WFB and WH40K but we didn't have the minatures so we never played them. When the current version of WH40K was released we just couldn't resist buying it and what a great game it is. The only regret I have is that I ended up painting all the plastic figures that came with the box, It's not that fun painting 40 identical Gretchins. I have spent hours and hours playing WH40K and seen both glory and misery. My friends and I have pretty decent forces of Space Marines, Orks, Eldar and Imperial Guard, I have painted most of them, but we are sadly lacking Tyrandis(only the ones in the Tyranid Attack Game and a Genestealer Patriarch), Chaos(a few chaos space marines, two chaos hounds and two greater daemons) and Squats(were we have just that). My favourite army in WH40K is the Space Wolves and maybe not so surprisingly my favourite dreadnought is Bjorn the Fellhanded. One not so memorable moment was the first time i used Bjorn and the legendary space marine ended up somewhere in warpspace due to a sneaky Eldar Farseer with a vortex grenade.
Then came Man O War, yet another excellent game. The Bretonnians are my force of choice when I take to the high seas. Excellent models paired with their deadly broadsides. Hmm where are those Bretonnian knights now. Much good they will do at sea with their natural disdain for artillery. Well I'm sad to say that MOW didn't become a hit with my friends and to play all by myself was never fun. We also have both Tyranid Attack and Warhammer Quest but neither of those games were too popular, so once again I sit there with two great games and no one to play. I'm not to sad though because we play the other games even more instead.
Necromunda, a great combination of WH40K together with a great campaign system that allows your gangs to develop some personality and get better at fighting, was the next purchase we made. Here I favour Delaque with their nice coats and the Spyrers. The Spyrers have some of the coolest models yet and were an absolute joy to paint. Once again most of my friends didn't get into the game the way they had done with Blood Bowl and WH40K. In the end it was only me and one other person. Sure it's fun to play Necromunda, but when you play your archenemy(only enemy) for the hundredth time in a row it's not that appealing anylonger.
During all my years playing different games there was this one game that I've never tried but it has always been around. When the 5th edition of Warhammer was released we bought it the first day. At last I got to try it out for myself, after reading all those articles and battle reports in White Dwarf and I just loved it. After checking out the different army books I decided to start a Dark Elf army. The Dark Elves really appealed to me with their multitude of special troop types, but it was not the easiest choise to make. All the races in Warhammer are really cool and all have their pros and cons. Naturally I would like to have all army books with complete range of models(painted of course), but thats just a dream. Now that I have collected a pretty decent Dark Elf force I'm starting on a Skaven horde. Am I stupid or what??? I complained about painting 40 Gretchins, thats nothing compared to what I need to paint for the Skaven army, but I just can't help myself, all those wonderful rat models with their wonderful warmachines.
I think I'm addicted to GW products. No not really but they are the best products on the market and keep getting better too. For me, now it's just a question if I can keep myself from buying the new Epic 40K. I haven't even tried the old version, but I can't wait to get my hands on some of those beautiful tank models.
On a final note I would just like to bring up an issue that has made headlines in more countries than just here in Sweden. To play roleplaying games and other types of games is not bad for you. And those parents(other adults too) who blame roleplaying for what their childen are doing just don't want to face the real issues, that there might be something that is not right with their child or their relation with their child. People saying that playing games are the reson for suicide, drug abuse ,violent behavior, cruelty to animals, murder or satanism couldn't be more wrong. It's the same with those who blame rock music. Of course nobody likes to see that there might be something wrong with themselves or in their relations, so they blame the easiest thing, projecting is the easy way out. The games are not the problem, there are other things behind the facade, real problems that need to be delt with. Don't waste your time and energy blaming a game, find the real issues instead, don't take the easy way out.
