SAAB J29 The Flying Barrel

J29 The Flying Barrel, was build by SAAB in huge numbers (661). A very successful construction, with its
swept wing and strong Ghost engine, giving the airplane excellent performance, compared with Mig 15 and
F86 Sabre. Several world speed records was set in the beginning, by the J29.
The particular aircraft in our Museum is a recce a/c S29 from 11th Wing (F11, Nyköping) and it served it's
last active years as a target tower, for 3rd Wing (F3,Malmslätt). Our aircraft is not airworthy, just for static display.
In Sweden we are lucky to have 1 airworthy Flying Barrel. It's a J29 F (with afterburner) "Yellow Romeo"
3rd squadron 10th Wing (F10, Ängelholm). Still stationed at the same airfield, and performing a number of
displays each year. The aircraft flew again in 1995, after about 19 years since the last flight. We send our
thanks to all peoples involved in this massive work, throughout the years, to put this beautiful aircraft back into
the air once again.
