The story of The Soul Preachers
Part two: 1988 - 1989

After their short "tour" in Finland the band broke up again. The rest of the Dorian Gray didn't like that half of their band toured in foreign countries with another band. So Tero and Vesa left The Soul Preachers. Lars "Calle" Carlsson wanted to continue, he had such fun. But it took a couple of months again before they found a bass player and a drummer. But they did.

The name of the new drummer was Hannu Alakoski. He was the perfect drummer for The Soul Preachers at that point. He hits hard and distinctly and liked the same music that Calle and Jarmo: Velvet and Iggy. Soon they found even a bass player: Dan Pettersson. He was a former hard rock guitarist with a new Marshall stack and a metallic-red Van Halen type guitar. And long curly hair. The rest of the band had more punk rock attitude.

The 12-inch EP "The Correct Use Of Hope" is still available. Contact (e-mail ) us if you want to buy one.

The pictures on the right are from the recording session of the record. The first picture: mixing the record, from left to right: Lars Carlsson, Jarmo Haapamäki, Dan Pettersson. Second picture: Jarmo and Lars playing guitars. Third: Hannu sleeping. The fourth: Jarmo playing piano.

The Soul Preachers in studio, making the 12

Dan sold his heavy metal stuff and bought a bass rig instead. The Soul Preachers #3 was formed. It sounded even better than the last one. New songs were written and very soon went The Soul Preachers into a recording studio in Eskilstuna to make their first record. The songs: Touch And Go, The Harbour Of Love, No Place To Go and We'll Meet Again were recorded and it sounded OK. Not really like the band used to sound live, the engineer was an asshole who didn't let the guys touch the filters themselves. And Hannu, the drummer, had a terrible hangover when they played the songs.

Anyway, the songs were later published as a four-song twelve-inch EP The Correct Use Of Hope. But then were there no The Soul Preachers. Hannu took and went to Australia after the band was in the studio in spring '88 and said he'd get back in a year. Maybe. Calle was offered to take over lead guitarist's place in Dorian Gray and he said yes.

Hannu wasn't that long time in Australia. The money went out after only a couple of months and he had to come back. Dan, the bass player and Jarmo wanted to continue and they did. But they had found a great guy that could play the bass instead of Dan, who could switch back to the guitar again. The new bass player's name was Uffe Enokson.

It was autumn '88. The guys jammed together once or twice, but it wasn't really a band. They drank bier and red wine more often than played with their instruments.

The Soul Preachers moved their stuff from Hälleforsnäs to Flen, the town nearby where Hannu Alakoski and Dan Pettersson lived (Uffe studied literature in Åsa Folkhögskola near Flen), but they hardly touched them. After a couple of months moved Dan from Flen to Northern Sweden and in January '89 moved even Jarmo from Hälleforsnäs to the East Coast, Hallstavik, where he was offered a teaching job. Jarmo gave out the record with his own money in the early summer but he wasn't playing in any group, though he moved back to Hälleforsnäs. In fact, The Soul Preachers wasn't playing a tune together in 1989.

In an elevator. The Soul Preachers, May 1988 in Eskilstuna, Sweden, Skyline studio. We can hear the elevator in the beginning of "Borneo". It was recorded '92 in the same studio as "The Correct Use Of Hope" '88. The really tired guys from left to right: Dan Pettersson, Lars Carlsson, Hannu Alakoski, Jarmo Haapamäki.
