1983 or something, when I was still living in Finland, a rock magazine called Rumba compared my band, Muovikazzi, to groups like 22-Pistepirkko and The Cure. We were confused. "Strong influenced by the early Cure", they wrote. And we hadn't ever heard any Cure-records. Well, we found out later that we had heard "Killing An Arab" some time, but we didn't like the song. A couple of years later I became a Cure-fan. I saw the video "Close To Me" and I thought it sounded and looked great. I bought their new LP "Head On The Door" (it melted in the sun a month later...) and went to the library (in Jordbro) and listened through all the Cure-albums they had. I think they had them all. Later, I bought "Staring At The Sea" CD and I still think it's one of the greatest singles compilation albums there is. Buzzcocks' "Singles Going Steady" isn't so bad, either... June 13 1996, Hultsfred, Sweden The years passed and I never saw them live. I bought "Kiss Me..." album and maybe one more but they're not that great. It was almost incredible that the group still existed, and it looked quite funny to see Robert Smith standing there on the stage, looking exactly the same as in the photos and videos from 10-15 years earlier. The band wasn't the same. I believe that only the bass player is an original band member, the rest of the band is doing what they're told to do. In a way, that's a good thing. The Cure sounded great in Hultsfred. Maybe even greater than on the records. No false moves here, every tune and every chord were put exactly where they should. The songs were mostly old stuff: "Boys Don't Cry", "The Forest", "Close To Me" and so on. Of course "On Friday I'm In Love" made the ground tremble when 16.000 fans danced and cheered. The Cure played for about two hours. They had lots of hits to pull out of their hats. Like I said, it sounded great. Almost too great: the band wasn't much to see, they just stood there, and I could have been listening "Staring At The Sea" at home in my living-room. It didn't sound so different. I'm sorry to say that but I was bored after an hour or so. I wanted a beer instead. JARMO HAAPAMÄKI
