I think The Beach Boys is the greatest band ever.
You may be laughing now. If you haven't studied your pop history, you might
think I'm some kind of retro-nerd.
Sorry to burst your bubble, pal - The Beach Boys' music went much deeper
than the casual "Fun, fun, fun" songs they're known for.
Their leader and songwriter, Brian Wilson,
is a true musical genius - a legend in the music business. He has inspired
people like Paul McCartney, Tom Petty, Thurston Moore (Sonic Youth), Nick
Cale (Velvet underground), Peter Buck (REM), Graham Nash & David Crosby
(Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young) and many more. So how come all of these people
praise Brian Wilson's music so much? How come newer acts/artists like
Rivers Cuomo (Weezer), Frank Black (Pixies), Daft Punk, St. Etienne,
Sean O'Hagan (formerly Stereolab, now High Llamas), Matthew Sweet,
18 Wheeler, Pizzicato Five, Grant Lee Buffalo - but also older ones like
Per Gessle (Roxette, Gyllene Tider), The Ramones, Neil Young, Bruce
Springsteen, continually pay tribute to him and his music?
All this name dropping probably seems weird unless you've heard the music,
really heard the music. For this music is not only the music that
orchestrated some of these people's child- (and adult-)hoods, it also continues to
inspire and change the lives of people - probably always will.
So if you don't know where to start, buy the (quite expensive) Capitol
5 CD box set
Good Vibrations, and then, or if you decide to skip the box set, the Capitol
CD Pet Sounds. Pet Sounds, released in 1966, is regarded as Brian
Wilson's highest achievement, by many regarded as the best album ever.
Mojo magazine (English music mag) is one of the fans, check
this
out (on a related note - in a recent vote of the 100 greatest rock singles
of all times, the Beach Boys came first with "Good vibrations" (no, not
Strawberry fields/Penny Lane, sorry). And New Musical Express also
voted Pet Sounds to be the number #1 album of all times on a recent list.
So have you gotten Pet Sounds? Listen. Listen again. Is it coming to you
yet? No? Listen again, several times. Congratulations. You've just entered
the wonderful world of Brian Wilson's mind (otherwise, get your head
examined! :)...
Anyway, here are some hyperlinks. This is not "the definitive link
collection", I suggest you go to another site for one of those, this is
merely a list of the places I usually visit regarding the Beach Boys and/or
Brian Wilson.

The Beatles is also one of my favorite groups. Like it or not,
John,
Paul,
George and
Ringo
were instrumental in the creation of "rock music" as we know it.

These guys from Manchester are mainly cloning a famous foursome from Liverpool,
but they do have something that makes them a wee bit special. I mean, the
chords are nothing special, not the production either. It's just
something that can't be defined - just stunning pop melodies. From
the latest issue of Mojo: "Whatever you say about Oasis and their behaviour,
they do write good songs" (George Martin).
