with a hammer ________________is the music to the film video of the same title
directed and written by Mark Ellis and filmed by Daniel
Faoro. It is a collage of images and scenes exploring,
through a marriage of music and image, christian
symbolism. After two thousand years of christian imagery
it is difficult to approach such symbols with a virgin
eye. The implications contained within the image are too
strong, reinforced through history, experience and
indoctrination. Christian symbolism and morality are
ingrained in two thousand years of western cultural
conditioning. The film video explores the status of woman
and the nature of sexuality. "as long as a woman is for birth and children, she is different from man as body is from soul. But when she wishes to serve christ more than the world, then she shall cease to be a woman, and will be called a man". St. Jerome. |

with a hammer________________Through the use of imagery and juxtaposition it
questions cultural values that have been brought to our
thinking by a patriarchal christianity, that has forced
historically the position of woman in society. "unto the woman, he said, I will greatly multiply the sorrow and thy conception; in sorrow thou shalt bring forth children; and thy desire shall be to thy husband, and he shall rule over thee" Genesis 3: 16 Another idea that is explored through imagery is the christian ideal of suffering and martyrdom. There are symbols that have a meaning, for greater than the aesthetic itself which are also ingrained through cultural conditioning. It has been established what is acceptable and what is not acceptable in imagery based on a christian viewpoint, a viewpoint of a society where the violent image is considered less taboo than the erotic. This dominance has a backlash to a contemporary way of thinking. |
