The Beatles in Sweden

The members in The Beatles during the 60's

This is an attempt to inform interested readers (surfers) of the glory Beatles days in Sweden during 60's.

The Beatles never went back to Sweden as a group after their two-day-tour 1964.

In October Saturday the 14th and Sunday the 15th in the year of Sgt. Pepper, 1967
half of The Beatles, Paul and George made a short weekend visit to Falsterbohus in the southern part of Sweden, just east of Copenhagen. They were there to visit Maharishi Mahesh, that Indian meditation guru, you know.

No tie
The newspapers made it big for another funny reason:
Paul and was denied entrance to a Swedish pub called Rådhuskällaren in Malmoe because he didn't wear a tie.
- We have our rules. On Saturdays and Sundays all our guests have to wear a tie and we make no exeptions from the rules even if it happens to be a Beatle, said the headwaiter.
- Exactly as in London, George mumbled.

Tie less Paul and George had to find another place in Malmoe to eat. A place called 'Tunneln' was where they finally got their meal;
two sandwiches with ham and milk plus coffee.
A local photographer asked them to smile witch made George to answer:
- We're not smiling, we're eating!

"Please, let us have 5 minutes to ourselves" written by Paul on a card to the Swedish magazine 'Bild Journalen'

On their way to Falsterbohus, made in a white Volvo Amazon, Paul saw a pair of flame-coloured shoes in a show window. A fast stop and the shoes were bought. The woman in the store didn't show any sign of recognizing Paul, but she must have to.

The white Volvo Amazon first in line, took Paul and George to Falsterbo

Fans outside the hotel in Falsterbo

In Falsterbohus they took in to a hotel. After a couple of minutes George had to throw out a young lady that had been hiding in his room.
Notice Paul's waistcoat, a present from a fan. He really liked this waistcoat as you can see it on several pictures from different occasions.

A moment of peace with Ewa

The year was 1967. Paul and George had come to Sweden to seek peace, but...
They did in fact meet an old friend from the Beatles days in Sweden in 1963 and 1964.
Ewa Säfwenberg had come to Falsterbo to meet Paul and George and to see that they at least had one person that they could trust and have confidence in during their stay in Sweden.

Maharishi Mahesh and George at the hotel in Falsterbo

Three guys from Swedish Television wanted them to be in a show called "Pop Corner", but they didn't accept the offer.
By midnight it was quiet and peaceful. Paul and George sneaked out the back door for a walk on the beach.

Anyway, they got their private meditation with Maharishi Mahesh. A rumour says that the meditation was nothing more than discussions about money, tuff discussions.

Right: Maharishi did hide in the hotel suit.  Here he can be seen on his way to his room

The Beatles was very disappointed over the way they had been treated by Maharishi Mahesh. They thought that they had reached a higher level, a universal living utopia, when they discovered that Maharishi Mahesh had used them for commercial reasons.

The departure from Sweden nearly ended up in a tragedy. The car that took them to the ferry didn't waste any gasoline. The press and some fans followed the car. And once four cars drew side by side along the 'not-so-wide' road from Falsterbo till Malmoe. It was very close to a car accident.

Not until Paul and George had looked themselves in, in the cabin in the ferry, the press and fans gave up. But in Denmark the hunting continued, but that's another story.

'They had come to Sweden to seek peace but had to flee in panic' one newspaper wrote.

George Harrison

Delaney & Bonnie & Friends with Eric Clapton as one of the members made two concerts in Sweden 1969. One in Stockholm the 13th December and the other one in Gotemburg the 14th December.
George appeared as guest guitarist on both of the concerts.
