To know more about my thoughts about the Small Cyclades, see the page about Donoússa.

Schinoússa is a really quiet island, so if you like a calm and tranquil place this is it.

Where to stay?

To top

Out of season there is a good chance that people offer you accommodation and since most of the rooms are in Chora, you will be picked up at the port. Several new pensions have been built lately in Chora.

If you on the other hand like to stay close to a beach there is a place down by the Tsigouri beach with rooms and a tavern. The establishment is called Holiday Land and run by George Gripsos and with telephone: 0285-71930. The same person also runs the combined Tourist Centre, Super Market and Travel Agency that you find immediately when you enter Chora from the port.

Stratos Spyrilis who runs the pension Anesi picked me up when I arrived to the island. The rooms at Anesi are nice and have a beautiful view to the west where you have the sea in the horizon. For more information call 0285-71180.

What to do?

I consider Schinoússa to be a very calm island, at least of season. Chora is a pretty small village; it takes 2-3 minutes to walk the main street and sometimes you don't meet a single person.

You have to be able to entertain yourself. But if you are visiting a island like Schinoússa I suppose you are looking for peace and quiet.

It's an advantage if you like to walk; this is the only way to reach the different beaches.

Beaches

To top

There are about 15 beaches on this island but unfortunately only half as much are worth visit. The other beaches are dirty by different reasons: garbage, oil or seaweed.

BeachThe closest beach to Chora is Tsigouri taht you find if you take to the right (east) where the village begins. The walk is about 10 minutes. It's a nice sandy beach, with a nearby restaurant and pension, see Where to stay section above.

BeachFurther to the south there is a beach called Livadi (have you heard the name before?). You reach the beach after a 15 minutes walk. It's a sandy beach and capes on both sides protect it. You can find some shadow underneath some trees. In the surroundings new buildings was constructed during 1997. I suspect that some of the buildings are planned to be taverns and pensions or hotels.

BeachNext beach to the south is Aligaria, which actually consists of three small coves with sand. You have to walk about 30 minutes to reach those beaches.

C.O. beachTo the south-east in a small bay you find LioLiou beach and some hundred metres to the north Bazeou beach. It two small coves mostly with sand and with rocks between. Of season these beaches are very quite and I regard them as CO-beaches. On main-season there may be more visitors to the beaches thanks to a nearby tavern that then is opened.

BeachAlmiros beach to the east is a sandy beach with tamarisk that provides with some shadow. There is a settlement nearby. A twenty minutes walk from Chora.

BeachA little north to Almiros beach you have Foudana beach. Too much seaweed I'm afraid.

BeachMaybe the most beautiful beach is Psili Ammos north-east of Chora. The beach has nice sand and is well protected since it's situated in a small bay. You can't find much shadow on this beach, but some tamarisks have been planted. To reach the beach you are heading north to the little village Messariá. There you find a signpost to the east. It's little less then half an hour's walk.

BeachThere is a small beach called Fikio North of Messariá. You can’t find any shadow on this beach and unfortunately the beach have a lot of seaweed.

C.O. beachIn the north-west there is a beach called Gerolimionas, at least the bay has that name. The beach is nice situated in the bay which is rather deep. But there is a garbage and oil on the beach so it is not a particularly pleasant experience. I don't think this beach is much visited, so it's no problem to be naked if you like.
