More about the kennel
|
For 24 years we, Annica and Nisse Uppström, have been breeding Samoyeds in the name of Nordvikens. In 1983, we bought our first Samoyed, Great Rimskij, from kennel Great. There, the breeder, Elga Carlsson, said that "first you get one then you get two, then you lose your counting! "No," we said in one voice, "we only want one." Now, we have twelve Samoyeds, we think... We were initiated in the wonderful word of mushing dogs when we got in touch with Kennel Jamals, where we bought our second Samoyed (Jamals Belosova, alias "Bessie").

In 1986, we mated Jalmals Belosova and Great Rimskij and we kept the bitch Nordvikens Awoshka. These three dogs made our first team, and soon we wanted one team each. A puppy from Rimskij ( Natasja) came to us, and with Bessie, Awoshka and Natasja, the number of dogs steadily increased. We breed on a small scale and practically only when we want more dogs ourselves.
In 2003 we decide to start with an other breed, and the choice was very easy - Siberian Husky. The goal is to run middle- and log distance races with all our dogs.
During 24 years of breeding, we have raised 21 litters (Samoyed) that so far have resulted in 25 Swedish Polar Championships (It's a Swedish sled dog championship), 13 Nowegian Trekkehund championships (Norwegian sled dog championship) and 18 Exhibition Championships. We get a lot of help from relatives and friends who see to it that our elder dogs get a comfortable old age. In this way, we get room for new dogs and this ensures that we will have many wonderful sled tours for many years to come! In order to get the best possible training, we bought a house in Jämtland, north part of Sweden. This gives us a great possibility to train and race our dogs on snow, which is very different from training with a cart on bare ground. Every season, we usually race about 5000 km on snow and it is with the greatest pleasure you watch the dogs who love their task.
Racing has become a secondary thing to us. It is a very pleasant way to meet people with similar interests to you, and to find out how your dogs are doing in the competition. During the rainy training evenings we think about the beautiful mountain tours when early spring comes, with a frozen crust in the morning and thaw later in the day. The fact that you have to get into your sleeping bag in the evening when the temperature is twenty degrees (Celsius) below zero is something you learn to deal with when you have the right equipment. It is like going to bed in the freezer.
Four times we got a very special prize for working breeders from the Swedish Kennel club, and our bitches SUCH S(POLAR)CH NTCH NUCH Nordvikens Dinka-Demina, S(POLAR)CH NTCH Nordvikens Larizza Demina and PDP SUCH S(POLAR)CH NTCH Nordvikens Inja got the very special prize for dogs who had produced working dogs. |
