This 50 gun ship under the command of Admiral Thomas
Cavendish (the first Englishman to visit St Helena) was sent to the East
Indies to add strenght in the face of a Dutch and French build up of power
Even as early as 1586 Europeans were realising the value of colonies so
far away and snet powerful shipe to protect trade routes.
