January 2003We drove out to Colonial Williamsburg, which is a three-hour drive from Lynchburg. The city is located on a peninsula between James River and York River, which both run out in the Chesapeake Bay. Williamsburg was founded in 1632 and was then named Middle Plantation. It changed names in 1699 and was the capital of Virginia between 1699 and 1779. Today, the capital is Richmond. Many of the houses in Wiliamsburg were burnt down in several fires. In 1926, the city was restored and the main sponsor was John D. Rockefeller, Jr. 700 houses were knocked down, 83 were restored and 413 were rebuilt on their original loctions. The city has guides and actors, dressed as 16:th century people:
Close to Williamsburg lies Jamestown. It was the Englishmen's "first permanent settlement in America". The back-side of Virginia's quarter celebrates Jamestown, which has its 400-year anniversary in 2007.
