Cherry trees and the Washington monument, 2-APR-2002.
The famous cherry trees along the Potomac river are blooming in March to April. The trees were originally a gift from Japan to the US. In 1912, 3,020 trees were shipped from Japan to Washington. These were planted in the East Potomac Park, the Tidal Basin (West Potomac Park) and around the Washington monument. Now there are 3,750 trees (all according to Cherry Trees of Washington).
