Six hours from Lynchburg, by the Atlantic Coast, lies the island of Chincoteague. You get there by driving to Virginia Beach and up north, using the 27 km long Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel (www.cbbt.com).
Chincoteague reminded us of the Outer Banks, NC.

On the Island of Assateague there are wild horses. According to the legend, they are the ancestors of horses, on board Spanish galleons, that survived shipwrecks on the coast. A more historically correct explanation is probably that Englishmen in the 17:th century, living on the mainland, brought out the horses so they wouldn’t have to build fences or pay tax for them. We never saw any horses but that was because they had gathered them all up for the annual swim. On the last Wednesday and Thursday in July, all horses are rounded up by the Chincoteague Volunteer Fire Department. Then, they let the horses swim across the sound over to Chincoteague, where some of the foals are sold at an auction. This year, an estimate was that 40,000 people would come and watch the auction/swim.

At Wallops Island, on the mainland, NASA has a research facility. Nowadays, most of the research deals with airplane noise. Every now and then, a rocket is launched. These never leave the earth's atmosphere. See a map of the area here.
