Comprehensive Guide to the Origin Question in the Warhammer and Warhammer 40K Universe

[Introduction] [Part 1 - Chaos] [Part 2 - The Old World] [Part 3 - Sigmar] [Part 4 - The Tyranid]

Introduction

This will attempt to tie together some threads from Rogue Trader, 40K, and 4th and 5th edition Fantasy, and Slaves to Darkness - plus some assorted stuff from White Dwarf and other stories I've seen around. This has been worked out over several years of playing, and with the help of quite a few friends. We try not to contradict the fluff in any of our sources, and invent quite a bit ourselves. When I started actually writing down this theory, I discovered it had gotten very long, and so I'm breaking this up into a series of articles.

Incidentally, I claim that Fantasy and 40K are the same universe. In discussing origins, a fair amount of material is 40K related. If you have no interest in anything involving 40K, please jump to the next thread.

These articles will attempt to answer the following:
  1. Who were the Old Ones? What role did they have in shaping the Fantasy world? Why did they do this? Is there really a master plan they set down?
  2. What is the role of the Chaos Powers in the Fantasy and 40K universe? Who was responsible for Slaanesh's birth, and how was that accomplished?
  3. Are the eldar and the elves related? Are orcs orks? Goblins gretchin? Are the humans in Fantasy the same race as in 40K? What is the relationship between Sigmar and the Emperor?
  4. What are Zoats? What role do Tyranids play in the larger universe? Have they ever been to, or have any interest in, the Fantasy world?
  5. Why should I care? (OK, this one I probably can't answer)
