Iconostasis

The object of the icons in the iconostasis is to point out the divine history and to act as a dividing line and a link between the divine and the human, the holy and the profane. By way of their represented holiness, the road is pointed out which God has chosen for man's salvation and the road people ought to enter upon in order to be reunited with his Saviour.

In the Orthodox Church room the iconostasis is probably the most prominent interior, but there is a number of different icons, freestanding or in al-fresco. The praying man stops in front of them, makes the sign of the cross or falls on his knees, sacrifices a candle in their honour and prays for people. Here, they are present - through the representation of the picture, the divine is present - right now

Byzantine icon painting is holy art. It is an art spiritual in its essence and its aim. It has seven functions:

  • To enhance the beauty of the church with a beauty which is holy.

  • To instruct us in issues belonging to the beliefs of the orthodox Church.

  • To remind us of this belief.

  • To show us the prototypes, the gallery of holy characters that the icon depict.

  • To help us imitate these characters' good qualities.

  • To help us reshape ourselves, so that we will become more spiritual.

  • To serve as a means, to look up to God and value his saints.
