Iconography

De iconographic motifs can be subdivided into four groups:

1. The principal groups are the the Holy Trinity and the divine hierarchy.

2. The second group of motifs presents the mother of God. This group constitutes approximately 200 pictures. a. Hodegétria (Greek = the female guide), The female guide with eyes that look straight forward holds the Child Jesus on her left arm and directs her right arm towards him. This is the most significant of the representations of Mary.

b. Eleousa (Greek = she who has mercy). The merciful woman who lovingly embraces the Infant Jesus. This Godmother of tenderness is the most widely spread representation of Mary.

c. Blachérnoissa(Greek = sign), the sign for the mother of God who stretches out her hands in a prayer for humankind.

d. Platytéra (Greek = broader) represents the Mother of God sits on a throne with the Infant Jesus on her knee.

3. The third group, the icons of the days of rejoicesnew01.gif (172 bytes) is the most interesting one. The icons of the days of rejoices are a fixed part of the Greek and the Russian iconostasis (place where the pictures are set up). The pictorial content is from the Old - and the New Testament. The entry into Jerusalem is among the principal feasts.

4.The fourth group is the representations of the Saints. There are 7000-8000 different motifs. The Saints are identifiable only through their names that should always be inscribed on the icons.
