Native American Corner

Native American Corner
My greatest interest is North American Indians
(Native Americans)

This shows in many ways. Among other things I read a lot, both historic and modern books and articles. 'Cause I care and take active part in the struggle, You can find links on my site about Leonard Peltier and Big Mountain.

A couple of times I have visited the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota, USA. The inhabitants are mostly Oglala Lakota People (known as the Sioux). It is an exciting, strange country, it's not like anything else I have seen, traveling in the world. It has left prints in me and my life for ever. You can find links to Pine Ridge and South Dakota, among them Bear Butte even though it is a place outside the reservation. It is a sacred place for several tribes.

With my links I would like to share some of the beauty and different things, that I have experienced.  Or things I care for.

On the reservation they have a radio station, KILI. Take a stop there.

Another place that is worthy a stop is Lakota Fund. Maybe you'll meet some of the great artists in Pine Ridge.

During the resent years, the people on Pine Ridge reservation has, once again, picked up the war hatch against the government. They suffer of poverty, broken treaties and of bad treatment. Did you think the Indian wars was over? Not! Since 1868 when the first treaty was written about boundaries and their rights, the government has been changing those boundaries more then 50 times!
Do you remember the massacre at Wounded Knee?  That massacre has been given the  Lakota's deep wounds. Then they were persecuted  because of their religion and how they worshipped. It is still going on - encroachments happens all the time against their right of being Indians. Not only to the Lakota people,  but to every Indian who dare  and want to be different from the American society.

Another place that I have visited, is Big Mountain, which is located on the Navajo reservation in the northeast corner of Arizona. Navajo call them self Dinéh ( the people) and are a complete different people, compared to the Lakota's. Mostly they live far out in the mountains, as sheepherders and farmers. Many of them are skilled silversmiths, and others are making beautiful rugs. The traditional Dinéh has got many life rules and are very religious. On Big Mountain they do not live in harmony and happiness any more. The natural resources that exists on their land, has created conflicts. Both coal mining companies and the government  want to relocate Dinéh, and they have done that since the beginning of the seventies. Some  people still resists the relocation. The only thing they want to do is to remain on their land and live the life they always has been living. I recommend you to visit the link Big Mountain, there you can find more information and among other things there is a petition against the relocation.

Sign it - spread it.

Leonard Peltier

Leonard Peltier is a man I could speak about for hours. That's why there is several links about him. Go to them, read  about him.

In 1976 he was convicted for murder on two FBI agents. He was found guilty but says he is not. There's no evidences that could say who killed the agents. It is today known that FBI forced people to leave false affidavits. Please go to the sites about Leonard Peltier, read about him. Leonard Peltier Defense Committee is an organization who fights for Leonard. Go there.  And please tell me:

It is the year 2004, why is Leonard Peltier still in prison?

If you are interested in Native American dances, please visit a Pow Wow. There you can see and experience dances from yesterday in a new way. Yesterday the dances where spiritual, and they used them in ceremonies (you still have that today - but not for everyone to experience.) Of course they also had social dances, as they still have. Today the dances has become a way to socialize as well as an opportunity to give the youth a heritage. To Pow Wow is also a way of living. Some very good dancers spend a lot of their time in the Pow Wow circuit, traveling around the Turtle Island (The American continent) as well as visiting other continents in the world, and dancing, dancing, dancing.... and even teaching the rest of the world of Native American culture.

I have visited some Pow Wows in the US, and I have also seen dancers in my country. One of the Pow Wows I have visited was the Oglala fair (Oglala Nation Pow Wow) which is hold the first weekend in August every year in Pine Ridge, S D.

Gathering of Nations is a Pow Wow hold the last weekend in April, every year, in Albuquerque, NM. I was there 2001, 2002 and 2003 and that was an experience I wish I could share with everyone who visit my site.

I have got the opportunity to borrow some pictures from the web master of GON (Gathering Of Nations), so please enjoy.

This little fellow posed for me at the Gatherings in 2002.

He is cute- isn't he?

I also collect Native American postcards. Pictures of famous and unknown Native Americans make my fantasy come alive. I love these beautiful people, their art and the beautiful sights. You can find some at Amazon.com, and some at Playle's Auctions online and of course at eBay. Links is to be found in  Allrummet
