Friday the 13th was a true pioneer. It was one of the first slasher flicks to hack its way into movie theaters at the dawn of the 1980s and spawn a grisly legion of sequels and knock-offs.
It sets up the original story of Camp Crystal Lake, known to locals as "Camp Blood," and the terrible goings-on that occurred there. Some of these events include the fateful 1957 drowning of a young boy named Jason and the fact that none of the camp's randy counselors can survive a night there.
While revolutionary at the time, today's viewers will find it laughably bad, as the counselors are skewered in sundry ways. It does pick up during the last half-hour when the killer is revealed, turning into a genuinely frightening film. And guess what? The psycho isn't who you think it is.

This is the first of the series to feature Jason Vorhees and, along with the first one, stabs out the pattern the rest will follow.
A group of camp counselors finds its numbers dwindling as Jason hunts them down around the camp's grounds.
With nothing new to offer and little that isn't repeated in later films, this one is only for true fans of the series.

In Part III, the crazed Jason is on the loose again. Resting up at the deserted Camp Crystal Lake after a previous killing spree, Jason is delighted when he sees a whole new batch of teenagers arrive for him to dispatch.
The new group of doomed campers is led by a girl who in the past had escaped being killed by Jason. Also arriving at the camp are three gang members planning to stir up trouble. But they soon find themselves in the wrong place at the wrong time; Jason doesn't discriminate.
Previously filmed in 3-D, the cheesy sight gimmicks that abound were meant to impress audiences back in 1982. Unfortunately, popcorn and knives lashing out on video is not as impressive. The acting is terrible, and the plot basically non-existent.
There is only one highlight in this movie: the first appearance of the infamous hockey mask. Otherwise, the film ends ambiguously, with the feeling that Jason will be back to grind another ax.

The third film begins with a comatose Jason being spirited away to the local hospital. Presumed dead after the bloodbath in Part 3, the doctors and nurses foolishly leave the body unattended. Suffice it to say, Jason doesn't waste any time opening up full-time positions at the county morgue. Escaping the freezer, Jason makes his way back to home sweet home, Crystal Lake.
Meanwhile, the Jarvis family, who are lakeside residents, have just offered to rent their guest house to another group of naive teenagers out for a weekend of swimming and sex. Young Tommy Jarvis, played by Corey Feldman, is an avid fan of horror movies who, when he's not playing monster, plays computer games.
The teenagers show up, and are killed off one by one, much in the same way their unlucky predecessors were. A hiker out to avenge his sister's death also falls victim to Jason, and it is finally up to little Tommy to settle the score.
The highlight of the film is finally seeing Jason killed, if only for a little while.

Tommy Jarvis is now all grown up and living in a remote home for juvenile delinquents. Haunted by memories of Jason, the strong but silent Tommy experiences bouts of violence. Soon, the bodies start piling up in various states of dismemberment. Has Jason come back from the grave? Or has someone else donned the hockey mask?
Not that bad, although not that good, New Beginning isn't really new nor is it a beginning. It's just there.

Tommy Jarvis is still around and the fact that Jason appears to be dead and buried is not enough to quench his thirst for revenge, he wants proof that Jason is forever destroyed. Ironically, by digging up his corpse and jamming a rod in the body, which happens to be hit by lightning, he accidentally aids in Jason's resurrection.
Throughout this film Jason does what he does best - terrorize charming camp counselors. However, he kills with a little less of that flamboyance we've come to know and love.

Jason's back. Again. This time taking on the formidable task of single-handedly wiping out an entire cruise ship of high school graduates on their way to Manhattan.
While having slight ties to the original, the bulk of Part VIII's action takes place on board, as Jason dispenses with the unfortunate grads in a multitude of original ways. (One girl gets an electric guitar to the head. Another guy gets it in the stomach with a burning coal.) Finally the gore goes to the mainland as Jason scours Manhattan's alleys in search of the cruise's survivors.

Possibly containing the best production values of any of the series, this spree includes such low-lights as Jason slamming a woman's head in a car-door and hamburgers shaped like hockey masks.
And yes, in the end, Jason goes to hell.
