Monaco
GP
Race!
The Ferrari duo of Michael
Shumacher and Eddie Irvine made Sunday into a Ferrari day, in Monaco! Michael Shumacher
stormed away towards the first corner and beat Mika Häkkinen to it, at the same time
Eddie Irvine beat David Coulthard to the same corner. When Coulthard fails to finish and
Mika on lap 40 breaks in oil and slides
down the run-off road at Mirabeau, but recovers with Irvine just on his tail. Eddie who
made his pit-stop at this time and Mika hasn't.
Jean Alesi didn't make this brilliant start we are use to see him do, he got
behind his team mate Diniz. But soon he was past him, up to a 13th place. Jean made it
past Mika Salo and had some pace, but no really speed. The day ended on lap 50 when he
touch the barriers at Casino.
Qualifying
The man of the day in Monaco
is Mika Hakkinen! He made a stunning last run just as the chequered flag had been waved,
with Michael Shumacher 10seconds behind him on the track he snapped pole from the Ferrari
witch he had almost the whole qualifying session.
Jean Alesi ended up 14th on the grid. Not a great performance for the narrow Monte Carlo
track where overtaking is more difficult than anywhere else.
First
& Second practice session
Ferrari's Eddie Irvine set the
pace in the first timed session in Monaco with team mate M Shumacher point six of a second
behind. Alesi was 6th at the end of the first hour practice 1'466 sec off the pace.
At the second hour of the session we saw a charge from a number of drivers, first to set
the standard with a 1'23.554 lap was Hill. Panis winner in Monaco 1996, made a 1'23.318.
Mika Hakkinen sat the order straight at halfpoint with 1'23.163sec. This time was the
quickest until Michale got out for his last run and made a 1'22.318sec with 3 minutes to
go. And I don't know who's gonna stop him Sunday? Alesi ended up at 15th spot nearly 1'8
sec behind Michael. Let's hope the Sauber team can find that qualifying-setup until
saturday.
