Sunday
Jean Alesi:
I made a good start and my car was running well until a problem arose with the fuel system just before my first stop. The same thing happened on the second, when the engine cut out. I incured a stop and go penalty, then the fuel pressure dropped again, two laps from the end.
With regret, this race made me decide that I will not drive for the team next season. I will honour my contract for the remaining races, on some of my favourite circuits, but after that my life with Sauber is finished.

Pedro Diniz:
I made a good start and ran ahead of Jean for the first 19 laps, in ninth place. But then Mr. Sauber told me to let him by. I did this, at the chicane at the top of the hill, but I was upset and lost my concentration, and spun under braking. The car was oversteering in any case, and I let myself get caught out.

Peter Sauber:
Jean drove a hard race without any mistakes and had the chance to score one or two points, but the problem with fuel system that arose at our second stop needs careful analysis back at home at Hinwil. Pedro drove a good race until he spun.
I am sorry that Jean has announced that he won't be renewing his contract with us, because in our mutual interest we had made a common decision not to say anything before either Spa or Monza.


Saturday

Jean Alesi:
In my accident this morning with Pedro de la Rosa, I came upon him and he did three things wrong. First he was going slowly, second he was on the line, and third he lifted off. That's a very long corner, and I had no chance to brake. I just had to swerve to avoid him and escape a collision. But he came to apologise later. He didn't do it on purpose. He just made an incorrect evaluation. The problem for me is closed.
My right foot hurts now, but it was okay while I was driving. I had a problem with grip, and I think 11th place is th ebest I could have hoped for in the circumstances today.

Pedro Diniz:
On my first two runs this afternoon we tried old front tyres and made some progress, and then I was able to go faster still with new tyres on my third. I think the track was getting better as the session progressed, which in turn made it better for the tyres we chose. Unfortunately, I had to abort my last run after I came across Frentzen going slowly back to the pits.

Peter Sauber:
We missed qualifying in the top 10 today by a thousandth of a second, but given the heavy accident that Jean suffered this morning we can live with 11th and 12th places.


Friday

Jean Alesi:
This morning we did not have sufficient downforce, but we added more for the afternoon session and must now decide on the optimum set-up. I didn't use new tyres to set my time.

Pedro Diniz:
I lost half this morning's session, and half this afternoon's because of an hydraulic leak which stopped the gearbox downshifting. By the time I got back out again the track was damp in places, and I found one of them at the chicane at the top of the hill and spun off in to the gravel.

Peter Sauber:
Jean managed a lot of running today, 40 laps, and the information that we gained from them will help us to optimise our set-up tomorrow.
