| [ Who am I ] | I’m a percussionist who
has been playing with different projects in the latin/jazz/soul-genres
during the last ten years. The band I play with most frequently is the
Stockholm-based fusiongroup Way Past Cool. With WPC I’ve been playing around
clubs since the early 90’s. Our debut CD “The Return of the Fugu” was recorded
in 1996.
I’ve studied West African, Cuban and Brazilian music at Drummers Collective, New York. My interest in the roots of Afro-American music is very strong. I always remind myself about the importance of keeping contact with the traditional rhythms, especially since most of the work you get as a percussionist is in modern dance and R&B. I have written several music articles, some of them accessible on the net. At www.aliasnet.net you will find two, one about sampling and the other about the importance of the Afro-Cuban clave in modern music. At www.dancedirect.net I’ve published a text about trends in the production of modern dancemusic. Unfortunately they are all in Swedish, but at least you can see what they look like! I also work off and on as a DJ. Due to the fact that I will never play things I don’t like, the DJ-ing will never be so frequent. There are just a few clubs open-minded enough to let me mix modern soul and dancemusic with bebop, fusion and latin-american grooves. |
