INTROSPECT
Written by Alban Schmid

They released their debut album in 1997 (I think at least; I don't count the demo(s); it's called Introspect and it is an outstanding CD ! Those guys from Denver, Colorado play heavy prog metal developing on complex themes. The first noticeable element which appears at the first listening is the excellent punch of their sound : TQR makes no compromise on the heaviness ! The guitars dominate, relegating the keyboards on a second level. Their sound is deep and crunchy usually playing in the mid speed range. The keyboards on the contrary are rather in the background, integrating on several songs an atypical acoustic (piano) sound. This creates an interesting contrast between the powerful guitars, playing mighty staccato riffs and the keyboards focused on weaving a dark atmosphere on minor harmonies.

The skills of the two guitar players must also be emphasized : they display outstanding abilities (don't expect the virtuosity of Micheal Romeo nevertheless), but - and that is rare - they are creative in their solos, which are based on real melodies, not mere "filling" as frequently encountered.

Structurally, TQR alternates speed parts and calm tunes, keeping and excellent balance. And that precisely one of the best elements of the CD : these guys know how to compose a song !

Finally, the singer : he is very good, harmonic and pleasant to listen to, with a slight whining voice. Apparently he left the band and has been replaced.
