THE DIVINE WINGS OF TRAGEDY
Written by Magnus Florin

What can I say? Is it possible to make albums as good as this one. Obviously! Nine tracks that burst your heart and mind out, and that only because of the music. Then there's Russell Allen on vocals, which really is the main reason why I'm listening to Symphony X. The choir arrangements is not-of-this-earth on this album. And the astonishing thing about it, is that it's Russell who does it all. Can one man get so powerful. He's easy comparable to Ronnie James Dio, Tony Martin, Glenn Hughes. In fact he sounds just like all of them together, and then with that characteristic indivuality. The best singer of the 90's...

It's hard to pick out any favourite tracks on "Divine Wings of Tragdy", since they all really fall into that category. Maybe if I say that "Pharaoh" and "The Eyes of Medusa" is less good, but still good enough to break any chart of progressive top songs. The title track is a mighty one divided into seven parts. An epic track with everything a song should have. Real power, beautiful harmonies, heaven like choirs, attitude, roughness and a concept for the story. It fills up 1/5 of all the lyrics on the album...

Another good one is "The Accolade”, which really also is the kind of epic thing, similar to the title track. The main reason why I like this one is the obvious influences from Kansas. Of course, Kansas has never, ever been in the same minor mood that Symphony X are in, but some parts of this song has the same kind of build up. There's one part that starts out of nothing with a bell, playing some kind odd melody. Then on top of that, a keyboard enters. Then on top of that, a violin enters. This goes on for a while until there's at least seven instruments marching on. The thing is that they don't even play the same thing, but still there's this harmonic feel... Incredible! Kansas did something similar on Leftoverture...

The best album of –96. Definitive worth the money...twice!
