Imagine walking through a dark cold forest with no idea where you are. Around the next corner you suddenly stand before a field with the most beautiful flowers you have ever seen, and the sun shines brightly on a mysterious little lake that's lying there only for you to see it, like a jewel on a satin cloth. I'm sorry I'm getting so poetic in this review, but I have discovered such a jewel. The American band Spock's Beard has released three studio albums up until now, I don't have them yet, but I will. Reason for this sudden blind love is the new live album of this band, just released in Europe. You progheads don't need to look any futher, the gods have given their sign of supremacy to the humble crowds (we are not worthy....)! The recordings were made in 1995 on the great American festival PROGFEST. The album contains six songs that last about 72 minutes. And the music.....is simply out of this world. The complexity and originality of King Crimson, the epic adventures of the old Genesis, the warm vocals of Yes or Kansas.....Spock's Beard has it all, and better. This is warm, soulful, and absolutely great progrock everyone should at least have heard once. Forget the recent live recordings of bands like Dream Theater, Fates Warning, Stratovarius and Kansas, they fade to black in the shadow of this wonderful release. This year has brought the world two masterpieces of prog (remember the new Shadow Gallery) and I'm not so sure which one will be my favourite. You all shouldn't miss this one: BUY OR DIE!!!
