"Discovery" is the first album released by Danbury, CT-based
quartet Soundscape. Featuring Thorne on vocals and keyboards, the
guitarist Todd Rose, bass player Scott Waite, and drummer Lou
Caldarola. The album is following a concept that Soundscape
describes in this way: "This concept album takes you on a journey
through the life of a young boy into manhood as he comes face to
face with the questions and realities of sex, religion, society,
politics, drugs, and war".
Here you can find many influences mainly from the heavy metal
scene such as: Beethoven, Black Sabbath, Dream Theater, ELP,
Genesis, Gentle Giant, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Kansas, Ritchie
Kotzen, Yngwie Malmsteen, Tony McAlpine, Ozzy Osbourne, Pink
Floyd, Queensr˙che, Rush, Joe Satriani, Savatage and Yes.
They are all very tight musicians and instrumentalists lead by
keyboard player/vocalist Thorne. The music ranges from classic
progressive and symphonic rock, through classical music and jazz
to prog-metal. Partially very intriguing and intricate music full
of rhythm changes. All the band members are contributing vocals,
and they are all very good singers.
On this powerful album you can find many great tracks such as "A
Christmas Carol" (22 minutes), "Rite of Passage" (great vocals),
"Sailing", and "The Spirit of Adventure" (19 minutes). And I must
say that they really get away with those long tracks because of
the great-varied arrangements.
