THE WAKE OF MAGELLAN
Written by Wilfred de Bruijn

This is Savatage's third concept album ("Streets" and "Dead Winter Dead" came before this one) and it is written as a reaction to an article in a newspaper in which a ship's captain is found guilty of killing several Thai fugitives on open sea. The story of the album is about an old sailor (Magellan) who wants to quit sailing, but on his last trip he finds a fugitive ship, and that changes everything. I'm not very familiar with the story yet, because my copy of the album is the original promotional CD for Europe, and the lyrics are not included. But the story of the album isn't really necessary to enjoy the songs and atmosphere of the album. It opens with an intro ("The Ocean") in which the crashing of waves on the coast is gradually accompanied by piano and guitars. The second track is some kind of welcome to the listener (called "Welcome", how appropriate), which gives you the idea of the opening of a musical in some fancy theatre. From the third to the thirteenth track you are sucked into the story the music tells you. The guitars are played by Chris Caffery and Al Pitrelli (the original guitarist died before his time, see "Streets" review). I like this concept stuff very much, and I'm looking forward to what might be coming in the future.
