THE RITE OF PASSAGE
Written by Magnus Florin

The first reaction to this CD was very positive with the introducing track "Time Syndrome". Pangaea is not one of those progressive bands that try to mix up the time signatures and rhythms too much, which makes it quite easy to listen to. Of course they do have some strange rhythms occasionally, but in general it's a steady beat in the music, and that is good, I think. The vocals are really comfortable for the ear, to put it right. Very confident melodies and so. I can sense some Kansas soundings in it, even though the vocalist Darrel Masingale may have not listened to them at all, who knows. But it's often a situation where there's piano and vocals, but no guitar and that is typical Kansas.

Favorites on this album would be "The Ship (That Must Come In)", "The Winds (Behind The Door) and parts of the Trilogy "Traveler", especially part II, "Hollow Dweller". There are some really great backing vocals and harmonies in some parts in general which I think Pangaea should bring in more of. That is what reminds me the most of YES. In general this album is quite good, and should be attractive to many folks out there.
