WHEN THINGS GET ELECTRIC
Written by Greger Rönnqvist

Former guitarist/vocalist/keyboard player/composer of Kansas, Kerry Livgren's solo album "When Things Get Electric", consists of reasonable hard rock with a touch of progressive rock, with guest performances of Kansas member David Ragsdale on violin, giving it the famous Kansas touch on some tracks. Kerry is playing all the guitars, keyboards and bass by himself. He is also doing the drums on the track "Two Thousand Down".

The music is close to many of the Kansas albums and could easily be mistaken for being a Kansas album if it hasn't been for the loss of violin on most of the tracks. But I don't think Kerry wanted this to be a Kansas album, although he can't get away from it because of the impact he had on that band.

As Kansas is one of my favourite groups it's hard to not like this. It's quality as always with Kerry, and this is a very good album as well, although I think it's a little bit to mainstream. I do prefer the Kansas album "Freaks of Nature" with Steve Walsh & Co that came a year after this release.

In content you could say that this is an album worth having if you like Kansas related music, as it's not bad at all. All you others can buy something else instead, perhaps some of the old Kansas albums from the 70's that is a must have!
