TWO FOR THE SHOW
Written by Wilfred de Bruijn

The double vinyl album must be preferred before the single CD release of this great American pomp-rock band (the CD misses one song). Everybody knows "Dust In The Wind" as an all-time classic, but these people made many more memorable songs, and they knew (and still know) how to perform live. This album contains live tracks from several shows played in 1978 and gives a very good view of Kansas' capacities. I think it ain't necessary to describe the music (if you don't know this, you should do your progressive homework again) but this is definitely a BUY OR DIE!

TWO FOR THE SHOW

Ancient history of Kansas is the Two For the Show live album from -78. Just by looking at the play list of this one, you can probably see that this is a killer. It would actually be strange if you didn't own his one yet (being a Kansas fan then of course).

Introducing "Song for America" is the track that I think Kansas should start all their concerts with, and they did for a while, but nowadays that's no standard. Continue with "Point of Know Return" and you've already got what you've wanted. Great songs, great performance and great live feel. Other track that stick out more than usual would be "Icarus - Borne on Wings of Steel", "Portrait", "Journey From Mariabronn", "Dust in the Wind", "The Wall" and of course "Magnum Opus" as the closing number with a bit different stuff than the studio version.

Steve Walsh is at the top of his career during these tours that are collected on this album. It's not later than the Point of Know Return album, and by that time he was just too good. One thing that's always fascinated me is that he's a really good keyboardist too, and this is shown in his Piano solo (introducing "Lonely Wind"). He does some southern rock piano stuff, combined with progressive times and moods. Very good! Kerry Livgren is also featured in an acoustic guitar solo which is really good too, introducing of course "Dust in the Wind".
