ANTHOLOGY 1969-1976
Written by Greger Rönnqvist

This '70:s psych/progressive art rock band made a rare album in 1970 on the MGM label and a single in '76. Later they went separate ways to perform with bands like House Of Lords, Cannata and ArcAngel. On this double CD retrospective you get the best from that eponymous debut together with unreleased material, live renderings and three new tracks and solo material from the main players. The CD contains a very informative booklet and nice artwork.

They use a lot of different instruments such as: electric and acoustic six and twelve string guitars, organ, harpsichord, Celeste, flute, oboe, percussion, Theramin, ARP 2600 and the sacred Mellotron. You can hear references to Jethro Tull, King Crimson, Moody Blues, Nektar and Yes. The most important members of Jasper Wrath were James Christian (House Of Lords) and Jeff Cannata (Cannata/ArcAngel) and Michael Soldan.

The best numbers on CD1 are "Did You Know That", "Roland Of Montevere", "Odyssey", "General Gunther", "Follow Me Down" (The best track on CD1. It has a beautiful Mellotron and parallels to Jeff Cannata's later works with his band Cannata) and "The Ghost Of Way".

CD2 contains demos, live tracks and new solo material. This CD is a little bit unnecessary, as it's the weaker of the two. It does contain some fine moments though, such as Jeff Cannata's "Big Life" (a 7 minutes long progressive track in the later Magnum veins). There's also Bob Gianotti's track "In The Moment", James Christian's ballad "Where Does Love Go" (from his solo album "Rude Awakening"), together with a live version of "General Gunther".

Although you could exclude the main part of CD2 that am mainly for the collector I overlook that and rate it 5 out of 5. Recommended.
