H˙dra is a French band that has been around since 1994, but this
is their debut CD. The members of the band are from The Alpes.
They are playing a melodic Progressive Metal I think would attract
lovers of Dream Theater. I think that tracks like "Cross Section"
would appeal to many Dream Theater fans. Other influences are
early Bon Jovi, Magnum, Rush, Saga and Vow Wow.
All musicians have qualifications from French high schools of
Music (CMCN, Conservatories) and they are really good. The music
is going through many changing atmospheres and complex harmonies
with many surprises and qualities. Unfortunately the singer has
got a rather obvious French accent on some tracks. Maybe they had
better singed in their native language French. But that doesn't
bother me that much.
My favourite track is "Silently" that has got a guest appearance
by Fabienne Champey on lead vocals. Other highlights are "Heaven
knows" and "Remembrance of a Day past" together with the
aforementioned "Cross Section".
This is the only French progressive rock band I've heard that
could compete with progressive rock bands from the rest of the
world.
