The Hollow mini-CD was recorded during five days in 1994 in the
Electric Room studio, and it's Hollows debut. The material is a
bit less complicated than the one on their second release Modern
Cathedral. The mini-CD got very good reviews in Germany, Sweden
and Japan, although it did not sell quite as much as the band
would have wanted. It was released on a small record company,
Zakana records in Umeå, Sweden. It includes 4 songs:
Hollow is a band from Umea, Sweden that was formed in '89. Their
music is influenced from the classic 80's through 90's heavy metal
acts such as Queensrÿche, Judas Priest, King Diamond, Dream
Theater, Black Sabbath, Metallica, Megadeth and Meshuggah. The
very talented singer sounds like a mix between Geoff Tate, Rob
Halford and King Diamond.
What separates Hollow from other heavy metal bands is that they
are trying to keep things simple. Instead of writing intricate
songs where the lyrics and the melody get overshadowed by guitar
and rhythm section they focused on conveying an emotion or an
idea. A song has to be a unity where all parts are inseparable and
equally important.
I once was a heavy metal freak, but when the genre turned into sub
genres such as hardcore and grunge I became more and more
interested in progressive and symphonic rock. Nowadays the heavy
metal genre is turning towards the "old" heavy metal again. With
new bands such as Hollow, Hammerfall and a revitalised Helloween I
have became more and more interested in the genre again. And I
really think that Hollow is one of the best bands in this new wave
of heavy metal bands. This is a very good CD recommended to any
fan of the aforementioned groups.
