Elegant Simplicity is mainly a one-man band containing
multi-instrumentalist Steven McCabe. He's producing, playing all
the instruments (guitars, guitar synth, wind synth, keyboards,
programming and flute) and writing all the songs. On this the
first Elegant Simplicity CD there's also a singer called Ken
Senior. It contains 6 vocal tracks and one instrumental. The music
is poppy straightforward 80's neo progressive/symphonic rock with
nice melodies.
The best thing about this CD is the beautiful guitar work and the
thoughtful lyrics, and the worst thing is the drum machine. It
would have been nice to hear some real drums. The music is a mix
between Jean Michel Jarre, Mike Oldfield, Rick Wakeman, Jethro
Tull, King Crimson, Genesis, Camel, Pink Floyd and Pendragon.
The best tracks are the beautiful "Now Is The Time", "Take Me to
the River", "As Real As You Think", the 10 minute "20th Century
Breakdown" and the final instrumental prog epic "The Nature of
Change" that clocks in at 43:12 minutes!
This album isn't bad at all, but compared to the 1998 album
"Purity and Despair" it leaves a lot to wish for.
Elegant Simplicity also got a new album ready to release. It's
called "Moments of Clarity".
