THE 1986 OFFICIAL DEMO
Written by Wilfred de Bruijn

This is a rarity every Dream Theater fan should have. It's a (semi-bootleg) CD recording of the first songs John Petrucci, John Myung, Mike Portnoy and Kevin Moore made. The original bandname was Majesty and the singer on this recordings is Cris Collins, who didn't make it to the recording of the first Dream Theater album "When Dream And Day Unite". The style of the six songs on this CD has a lot of resemblance to the old days of Fates Warning (progressive Iron Maiden). They considered Fates Warning as their idols back then, but eventually this turned around completely and nowadays they're friends. The songs are very good, with a main role for Petrucci's guitar playing, but the production is not quite what you expect from them now (but good enough), but that seems logical to me. Highlight is the epic (11:13) piece "A Vision" which seems to be the missing link to "The Killing Hand" from the debut album. As said before, this is an album for the fans who want to take some history lessons about their favourite band. The CD-booklet ends with the following: "In order to persue their musical career, no band member returned to school in the fall of 1986". And we all know they made the right choice!
