REDEMPTION
Written by Bjørnar Bevolden

Meet Braindance, a highly talented five-piece from New York. Although "Redemption" will be their third release, I have to admit that I haven't heard this bands music before. I've read great stuff about them , but I always thought they were too odd for my taste, but guess what, I was terribly wrong. This was a very pleasant surprise and introduction to a unique and truly different band. Just check out the songtitles for a foretaste of what I'm talking about.

As the biography sais, they have created their own musical direction termed "progressive darkwave", and I guess that is a very suitable description of their music, because the music isn't exactly easy to put into any category. Braindance describe themselves as "cinematic-neuromantic progressive new age gothic metal Fusion" and if that hasn't made you curious, then nothing will.

This pre-production tape has eight songs from the forthcoming cd. The cassette starts off with "Refracture", which has some serious cool and catchy sliding bass lines at the beginning of the song, to be followed by a nice start/stop guitar attack and the deep vocals of Sebastian Elliot. The song has a strong melody line and a good chorus.

Track two "Resurgence" starts with really awesome rhythm orchestration, and a good melodyline sung by a very alive and emotive Sebastian Elliot. This song has a more uptempo approach and is catchy as hell.
Track three "Resilience" starts with only bass, solo guitar and a choir effect for then to slow down when the vocals begins. Very good song once again.

Track four "Reflexion", starts off with atmospheric keyboards and deep vocals ala Peter Steele just to give you a clue of the vocal style. This song is slow, dark, sad and beautiful and it makes you want to turn the lights off and put on your headphones, let your body and mind go and "float" with the music, because this music is HUGE and powerful. There are four more tracks on this cassette (Resurrection, Relentless, Return and Redemption) which all follow the fine style and direction as the abovementioned tracks. All songs are of high standard and some of the songs are among the best I have heard in a long long time. The titletrack is such a sad, beautiful, atmospheric, melodic and haunting song, that really touches me inside. This band has an incredible ear and understanding for immense melodies. The music is dark, melancholy, emotive, scary, floating, atmospheric, intricate, melodic, intelligent and at the same time extremely beautiful. Sebastians deep emotive vocals and the superb orchestration and rhythms by the band make this music a truly special experience. Unique and majestic, unlike everything you have ever heard. Also worth mentioning is the tasty fretwork of guitarist Vora Vor.

Braindance combine influences from many different musical directions to create a musical expression I've never heard before. As well as creating intelligent music they are extremely gifted as musicians too. I know I just keep on raving about this band, but truthfully, I can't really put my finger on anything negative on this cassette. I'm completely blown away by this band.

As most of the visitors at this site are fans of progressive rock and metal, I would like to say that you should not hesitate buying this bands music, you will find plenty of influences from various progressive metal bands and much more. It should appeal to you even though their music is a bit different than the typical prog rock/metal stuff. Every fan of intelligent music should have this cd in their collection when it's released. Essential !

Now it's time to check out their previous releases, this stuff left me begging for more.

Well this release is something for all that's into gothic stuff such as Manson, Type O and similar. I can also sense that fans of music from artists such as Sisters of Mercy and even Depeche Mode can enjoy this stuff. The vocals are really good, I think, and they sound like a mix of many different. It's definitely some Peter Steele there, but the melodies come from something else. More melodic than Type O, I think. Actually, I didn't think that I'd like this music as I took a look at the promo material, but already after the second listen I found it quite good. I'm usually not into this dark side of the progressive music, but this I can melt. Check out Braindance!
